Palmetto state of mind.

On South Carolina’s state seal, the motto, “Dum spiro, spero,” translates to, “While I breathe, I hope.” The seal also says, “Animis opibusque parati,” which means, “Prepared in mind and resources.” These are the exact sentiments Hippo embraces as we launch into the Palmetto State. Preparation and protection of resources is precisely why Hippo is in business.

South Carolina has some truly unique towns. Due West is located, well, you might be able to guess in what part of the state it’s located. A fun town to visit might be Climax, Wide Awake, or Quarantine. And if you didn’t know, South Carolina has an island of monkeys. Morgan Island is home to more than 4,000 Rhesus monkeys, but don’t plan to visit the island, as no people are allowed on the island.

And, to understand how Hippo is an ideal fit for the homeowners of the state, you need to understand the history behind this great land. At the Battle of Fort Sumpter the Confederate States Army defeated the United States Army and so began the Civil War. Fort Sumpter is now a national monument and popular tourist destination. Nicknamed the “Holy City”, Charleston is host to over 400 places of worship of various denominations throughout the city.

South Carolinians, are both proud of their heritage and their diversity of faith, like the rest of the country, are not immune to natural disasters and weather-related damage. In fact, South Carolina has suffered from major hurricane damage in recent history. In September of 2018 Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina at 7:15 a.m., and quickly was deemed the “1000-year Flood” due to the National Weather Service recording rainfall upward of 50 inches in some areas of the Carolinas and dumping across North Carolina more than 8 trillion gallons of rain.

As climate changes, these seemingly impossible and rare events are no longer either. These events are happening with more frequency.

On average, South Carolina home insurance rates come in around $1,426, $226 above the national average at $1,200. What you pay for homeowners insurance is determined by a number of factors including the precise location of your home, the age of your home and of course, your home’s likelihood of suffering damage from a major storm or catastrophe.

Hippo streamlines homeowner policies so you’re not paying for coverage that you don’t need. Hippo more carefully analyzes regional and statewide data to assess risk profile down to the property level. Hippo can save you, on average, 25% on your homeowners insurance premium. We can do that and still provide comprehensive coverage for precisely what you need.

Hippo takes important steps to ensure our you have tailored coverage to fit your lifestyle. For example, we’ve added several protections not covered by our competitors such as service line coverage, appliance breakdown for malfunctioning equipment and increased electronics coverage. Electronics coverage, including the items within most home offices are capped at $2,000. Like a custom suit, we tailor to your needs, your home, and your lifestyle.

Of course, you can’t have a customized policy without a concierge. Even though Hippo uses algorithms and data-driven insights for its policy creation, we are not an automated system, we are people talking to people. And, if you need to file a claim, much like a hotel, we provide you an assigned concierge who will not only take ownership of your claim from start to finish but proactively guide you through the claims process. Our Concierges will also reach out when major weather events are heading toward you and provide preventative information on what you can do to mitigate damage to your home.

We can provide a quote in under one minute. That’s right, less than 60 seconds. We are thankful to now be a part of South Carolina and look forward to meeting you.
